Two days ago, I spoke, in the context of California Dreaming – of songs that capture the era and location in which the song was released – well, here’s another one!

Scott McKenzie was a close contemporary of the Mamas and The Papas – he had performed with John Phillips in the early 60’s before Phillips decided to form The Mamas and The Papas. McKenzie went solo and this song – written by Phillips – was his best known and only commercially successful song in Australia.

As a piece of trivia, 17 days ago, I announced the Bee Gees’ Massachusetts as number 21 in this countdown. It is said that Massachusetts was written as an “answer” song to this one – San Francisco.
