Happily an Australian band at number one – the mighty Chisels. Celebrating – if that’s the right word – life in regional Australia in the early to mid 1980s. I was living in regional Australia at that time and get what Don Walker was trying to say about life in a small country town (supposedly Grafton in northern NSW). Young people who could get out of town, got out of town, whether that was to study or to just jump in their car and look for opportunities down the road, some place else. Those who couldn’t stayed where they were and ended up working in a local mechanic’s workshop or supermarket, settling into another generation of life, just like their parents, the grandparents and their great grandparents. As I have said, great songs capture locations, times, events, eras and this one does it brilliantly.

Undoubtedly the number 1 song in my 1980s Countdown … do you agree?
